Updating an SSD
Hey everyone, to sum it up, the recent Win11 update almost crashed my main SSD. I rarely let the PC sleep, but last week it went into sleep mode and when I woke it up after hours, it wouldn’t wake up—black screen, endless loading. After rebooting, it booted into a 6-year-old Windows 10 copy on my secondary HDD. Oddly enough, the SSD showed up in BIOS and Device Manager, but it couldn’t be accessed since there were no letters. When I connected it via SATA, it took about 8-10 minutes to start. After nearly an hour, DiskManager displayed unknown unallocated space with a red cross, and EASUS Partition Manager recognized the SSD after about an hour, asking me to initialize it in GPT or MBR. Attached are screenshots for reference.
I experienced several Samsung SSD failures similar to this. A component inside the drive failed due to a shorted capacitor, which caused voltage drops and prevented power from reaching it. Try disassembling the drive, then connect it to your PC without the case installed and power it on. Check the drive for any signs of overheating—especially if it feels extremely hot. If you find a shorted capacitor, it’s likely damaged. In most cases, you can remove or cut it in half to recover the data.
Setting up the drive carefully is crucial, as any failure could erase all information.
you can try using something like DD in GNU/Linux. just dd if=/dev/yourssdhere of=~/image.img if it fails then its not readable. I would do what I said earleir and check the drive physically for an issue because there is no risk to it.
