MSI B450/X470 MAX models come with Zen 2 built-in. MSI also verified they’ll receive updates for Zen 3/Ryzen 4000. Some additional boards offer this too, but you should check for the “Ryzen 3000 Ready” label on the packaging. It’s best not to purchase a B350, X370 or A320 right now, since not all support Zen 2, none will handle Zen 3, and the A320 is outdated. Previously, AMD provided inexpensive 200GEs as temporary chips for BIOS updates to enable newer processors. To update the BIOS without a CPU installed, ensure the board has BIOS flashback capability and verify compatibility specifically.
Motherboards featuring the chipset paired with a specific CPU generation will accommodate that model and its predecessors. For example, an A320/B350/x370 supports the first generation, while B450/x470 covers both first and second generations, and X570 is compatible with first, second, and third generations. Many will receive updates to enable future CPU support, though not every board comes with these updates included. The B450 model is most common, but the B550 has not yet been released, so check seller websites for compatibility details.
