You're looking for a tool to clean up Windows updates, focusing on safe, reliable versions. Consider using a utility that scans for and removes unnecessary or problematic updates, helping you avoid telemetry, breaking patches, and other unwanted changes.

Turn off automatic updates and handle everything yourself.

If everything functions properly, I’d just turn off Windows updates. If there’s one you require, search for it online and install it yourself. Setting this up would take a long time to download and apply all the Windows 7 updates.

Explore the materials I've shared in this blog entry. Avoid installing any non-security updates after June 2015. It's unclear if WU provides non-rollup updates anymore—WSUS might be your best option. If you struggle to locate updates with WU, refer to these helpful guides.

I set up Windows 7 on my secondary system last week and managed to apply some non-rollup patches. There weren’t many, probably around 100-110 updates, which is less than half compared to four months ago. This installation is only planned for next week when my ISP technicians visit (they’ll switch plans and need a new modem), so I just installed all the updates without much thought. To skip security patches, remember they already had Win10 adware in an IE security update (KB3139929—details here), so nothing is off-limits. The era of selective updates is over; Win7 and 8.1 are now just as problematic as Windows 10. Vista is approaching end-of-life in two months, making it an even less viable choice. It’s time to switch things up completely...
