I just changed from Win7 to Win10 using the free upgrade option. My current drive is a 1TB HDD, and I’m thinking about switching to a 500GB 850 EVO drive. I want a clean install but have questions about using the Windows 10 key for the installation. Since I upgraded from Win7 to Win10, can I still use that key? Or should I install Windows 7 on the new SSD first and then upgrade back to Windows 10?

Yes, you can apply the key. It seems Microsoft updated all Windows keys to Windows 10 during the upgrade process.

During an upgrade installation, your Windows 10 license is linked to your Microsoft account.

Begin by ignoring the installation prompt and then set up Windows 10 on your SSD. Once the first screen appears, you won't be prompted for any activation details—data will be retrieved from your motherboard and activated online. Verify that your existing Windows 10 is properly activated. Navigate to Settings → Update & Security → Activation. Confirm the activation status before starting the fresh installation.
