Updated Drivers
Updated Drivers
This weekend I plan to upgrade my PC from a Ryzen 5 2600x on an A320 motherboard to a Ryzen 5 7600x on a B650 motherboard. Should I worry about removing the old chipset and other A320/mobo drivers? Or will Windows handle that automatically? I’m not very familiar with this process, so I thought it would be best to ask for advice. Thanks.
You don’t need to reinstall Windows. That would be fine if you were switching from AMD to Intel, but I believe it’s possible without it. If you’re not getting the expected CPU performance, you should reinstall Windows since there’s no way to retain all your data without it.
That aligns with expectations. Probably best to allocate more space on additional storage if needed.
I also suggest a fresh installation of Windows to eliminate potential complications later... You might follow your usual steps and remove the AMD chipset drivers prior to upgrading. Modern systems are quite capable of handling platform transitions (though activation status may vary). Removing the chipset drivers ahead of time can significantly ease the process. If your motherboard allows BIOS flashback without a CPU, I strongly advise researching the procedure. Then obtain the BIOS file and prepare a USB drive with it, ready to install before swapping the hardware. It’s hard to be certain whether the CPU will be included in the motherboard’s initial setup today. You wouldn’t want to end up replacing everything just to retrieve the necessary files.
I’ll make sure to have the BIOS ready just in case. According to the support page, it’s supposed to work right out of the box, but I’d rather avoid any surprises. The graphics card I’m getting includes a flashing option that doesn’t require the CPU, which should give me confidence.
