Hello, I’m trying to make sure I didn’t make any major mistakes. I own a Dell XPS 8940 with an Intel 11700 processor and integrated graphics. When I bought it, I didn’t purchase a GPU because I believed the price would drop soon and I could skip it. Now that I’ve started more CAD projects and am more into gaming, I found a reasonably priced used 3060 graphics card. Since I’ve never assembled a PC before, I plugged it in but don’t know how to install the drivers or get it running properly. I’ve watched a few guides switching from integrated to dedicated graphics, but most only cover updating drivers after an upgrade or a clean build. I also saw a suggestion that the NVIDIA control app from Microsoft isn’t the right tool—maybe I need to check a different website and select the exact model. If anyone has a simple step-by-step or a test setup, it would really help. I thought I could handle this, but I’m feeling stuck. Thanks in advance.
Use the Nvidia App to locate your GPU driver automatically. For fan control and extra performance, consider MSI Afterburner, but verify your PSU capacity first—your previous GT550TI incident shows OEM units often only support 200W. Usually, the OS handles graphics tasks efficiently, so confirm GPU acceleration in CAD programs and other apps, especially if you installed them after the GPU. In BIOS, ensure OEM settings don’t force integrated graphics to display through the GPU. Also, connect monitors directly to the GPU, not via motherboard ports, and if nothing appears, adjust the BIOS settings for "above 4K decoding" and "resizable BAR" to ON/Auto.
