Updated AM4 board compatible with 5950x and 128GB RAM
Regrettably my old MSI B550 Tomahawk has passed away, and the RMA returned the refund. Now I'm searching for a fresh ATX motherboard to swap it in. I plan to use a 5950x board without overclocking, with four 32GB SSDs at 3200MHz, one 4.0 NVMe drive and another 3.0, running entirely on Linux. Ideally, the board should include an integrated IO Shield. At local stores (outside the US) I found these options:
- Asus Pro Art ($340)
- Asus Strix A/F ($320)
- Another MSI Tomahawk ($325)
- Gigabyte Aorus Elite v2 ($275)
Prices are in my local currency, which isn’t ideal. Unfortunately, there aren’t any decent x570 choices available. The Pro Art offers a nice feature—its second PCIe slot connects directly to the CPU, which could be useful if I later add a second GPU for computing. An x4 slot would also suffice for me.
Are there any overlooked downsides to the Aorus Elite? Otherwise, it seems like the cheapest and most suitable option.
Seize this chance to upgrade to a 7950x or 7900x format—they’re extremely affordable at the moment. These boards aren’t even worth the price they’re being sold for.
The price here isn’t reasonable, it doesn’t match my interests, and DDR5 isn’t suitable for my needs. The 48GB options aren’t available yet, which makes spending such a lot unnecessary. Value varies by region, and the AM5 boards are even pricier. I don’t live in the same area as you, so costs differ. There’s no clear reason to choose this over the Aorus model given the budget. I really liked it but can’t find a solid justification to pick it instead of the Aorus.
Part would stand out, though the Aorus Elite offers better value for its components. Gigabyte BIOS on AM4 is surprisingly easy to work with, aside from the limited stock situation.
The choice depends on what matters most to you. I didn’t pick one for no reason—just what fits your needs best.
