My only issue with time machine is that to a USB HDD it takes forever, and my Mac gets really hot. Is this normal or is it just my Mac?

Never experienced those problems with both my 2012 MacBook Pro (non-Retina) and my 2017 non-touchbar. The first time it usually takes much longer than usual. How much content is stored on your laptop?

It should be around 50 GB. I'm trying it again since I haven't done it recently, but it usually takes about 2 hours. Maybe the USB drive is the issue.

It's a USB 2.0 drive... but my Mac only has two USB 2.0 ports at a time.

I understand. For a desktop, you can always purchase a USB 3.0 card. (I don’t know the exact name, but it converts PCIe to USB 3.0)

It's a MacBook. I could build an air capsule from my Raspberry Pi to boost performance slightly. I'm okay with the delay, but you need to be present to keep it running; otherwise you'll have to restart it.

MacOS offers features that prevent your system from entering sleep or shutting down unexpectedly. Which version are you using? I often connect my external drive before leaving, but when I return a few hours later, my laptop still goes into sleep mode. The backups seem to finish without interruption.

I faced problems with the captain before upgrading to mac os sierra, though I haven't tested it yet. Previously, the time machine would halt even when the display went off. I recall you needed to reformat the drive each time. (I don't remember if that was my Mac or not...) I plan to try again after Christmas.

Downloading caffeine or amphetamine can help keep your Mac awake. You likely don’t need to format the drive every time—just format it once when you plug it in. It should be straightforward.
