Hello everyone, I have a brief inquiry about changing my BIOS settings. I’m running a B450M PRO4 motherboard with a Ryzen 5 3600 processor. I’m thinking about switching to the Ryzen 7 5800X, but PCPartPicker indicated an incompatibility and advised updating my BIOS. They warned me it might brick my system if I don’t follow their guidance. I’m trying to understand the process better after searching online, where some suggested it could be risky. The ASRock site has helpful tips on when not to update to certain versions. If I stick to the recommended upgrade path (P3.90 → P4.60), should that be safe? I appreciate any advice, even though it seems a bit lengthy for such a question. Thanks!

When BIOS is already active, why not update to the newest release? Age 1207 resolves many performance, stability and compatibility problems. Of course, you can damage your motherboard (needs BIOS chip swap or special flashing tools) if you interrupt the process while it's running—this takes a few minutes or more. Or if you halt it in any way, it won't work. Also, attempting to flash an incorrect BIOS will prevent the update. Regarding the processor, a Ryzen 7 5700X offers performance very similar to the 5800X (almost identical) but at a lower cost, with less heat output and power consumption, which is gentler on the board. For the price gap, you can invest in a good cooler, a tower with heat pipes and a 120mm fan.

Refer to the official update guides for your board. Make sure to thoroughly review the bios instructions. Some updates depend on prior changes, but if not, simply flash to the newest bios—it's a straightforward process.

People who don’t understand SPI headers and those tricky bios test clips are just stuck. Brick or not, it’s about how hard it is to fix things. BIOS chips are often a small piece of hardware (socketed) or slightly frustrating (soldered) to get them unbricked. Honestly, the confusion from not knowing keeps folks believing things that seem harmless or easy to solve. It can make your PC explode, ruin its fixability, or just cause frustration—yet still a bit funny. By the way, your board has an SPI header right above the top PCIe X1 slot labeled bios_ph1. It’s different from other ASRock headers, so probably using an ASUS SPI pinout. Since ASRock is part of Pegatron, which is under ASUS, crossflashing an ASRock BIOS on an ASUS board usually works.
