Is there anyone familiar with activating Windows 8.1? My main worry is obtaining a product key, as I still have my original key for Windows 8. I’m unsure if I’ll need an additional 8.1 key since it’s a free upgrade. I’ve seen some guidance suggesting this might be the situation. Have others experienced this issue?

8.1 performs much better than 8. I have 8.1 installed on my Dell Venue 8 Pro:3 Also, 8.1 came out a long time ago.

It’s okay if the key is free, but an 8.1 key is necessary for full access. Without it, you won’t be able to use the service properly.

Refers to the refresh function in Windows 8. It lets you update windows while keeping your personal information. I haven’t tried it yet, but I’ve noticed others discussing its benefits in the Microsoft Surface community. Since surfaces don’t include any Windows product keys, it seems unlikely you’d need one. Just because I haven’t used it doesn’t mean it’s not worth trying.

It seems likely since it's available on Windows. Microsoft probably confirms requirements on their site regarding the 8.1 key.
