Hey everyone, I have a query. I'm using a Z390 Platform with a 9900KS and a RTX 3090. The 3090 isn't working due to compatibility issues between the motherboard and graphics card manufacturers. I'm considering replacing the motherboard entirely. I have two choices: keep the 9900KS and switch to another motherboard maker, or remove both the motherboard and CPU and move to a different platform. The main question is which platform to switch to—AMD or Intel? Should I go back to Intel on the 11th generation or opt for an X570 with a newer Ryzen? Any advice?
If you're willing to accept financial loss, simply upgrade the motherboard. I'm not hoping you'll keep selling your 9900K above its retail price and then become inflexible when you can't afford a cheaper Zen 3 CPU. Also, do you really require more than 16 threads, or do you think the modest performance boost between the 9th and 11th generation i9s will make a real difference for your tasks? Both models use 16 threads and 14nm technology.
The issue lies with the board and the 3090 component. There are no typical problems usually associated with them, but something specific is affecting it.
@Nathanpete Losing money is tough, but based on how much I’d lose, I might accept it if things are resolved. I’m not looking for more than 16 threads and I think an IPC upgrade won’t help me. @jaslion It shouldn’t exist, yet it does. I own an ASUS ROG Maximus XI Extreme and an EVGA 3090 FTW3 Ultra. I’ve been reading a lot and found several forum discussions (some here, some elsewhere) about the same issue with ASUS MB and EVGA FTW3 cards. Why this happens... nobody seems to understand, probably not even ASUS or EVGA. I’ve spoken to both support teams, and they all say the same thing: “RAM the hell out of those two products, and eventually in a year or so it might work—just by chance.” Still, here’s my take: when I boot with the 3090, I get a black screen during Windows loading or after a few seconds. Once I restart, the MB freezes on Error 97. The debug screen displays “load vga bios” and then nothing. It gets stuck forever. I’ve tried resetting BIOS, updating it, clearing CMOS with the IO button, removing the BIOS battery, and even doing a clean Windows install—nothing worked (I installed Windows on my old 1080Ti).
You're about to purchase a solid new board without needing to invest heavily in a motherboard. There are many quality options under $200, and your existing board has some value that could make it a straightforward resale if you keep the packaging.
