I know updating Windows 10 is crucial, but some applications stop working properly after the update and there are other issues you shouldn’t ignore. I turned off Windows updates in the services list when I reinstalled it a few months ago. Recently, I saw Windows trying to install updates again. Even though startup type is disabled and stopped, it keeps running. I’m close to getting the 1703 Creators Update. I checked Control Panel > Installed Updates, but there are still remnants left. The system only shuts down or restarts to apply updates. How can I prevent new updates from installing? I don’t want this running continuously or stuck in sleep mode forever. I’d prefer not to reinstall Windows if possible.
It seems strange how Microsoft can push updates even when the service isn't active. That’s concerning. I’m not aware of any fixes to assist with this issue.
The only reason I can think of is installing software that monitors the updates service and activates them when needed. To resolve this without reinstalling the operating system, I’m uncertain. It seems Microsoft doesn’t offer a way to revert updates.
Most instructions about stopping window updates have been changed to indicate they’re no longer effective. It appears Microsoft consistently overcomes these approaches. I’m running Windows 10 Enterprise on a VM host with Media Center, and since installing it six months ago I haven’t received any feature updates or reboots needed. The version is 1607, though critical patches still arrive occasionally. Windows 10, or Windows as a Service, seems set to keep updating regardless of preference. I haven’t reviewed the full terms, but I suspect they’re hidden in complex legal language.
It has been operating smoothly for several months without any problems. It seems it's finally time.
