After several weeks of troubleshooting, I finally resolved the issue. The problem was a failing video card that couldn’t be replaced easily—it was soldered directly onto the motherboard. The cooling system also felt quite bulky. After reinstalling OS X 10.4.6 and updating to 10.4.11, I powered down the machine and used the power button plus the Option and C keys to fix it.
