I couldn't locate any discussion about this specific scenario: Mobo: msi pro z690 with 12700k CPU. My brother's CPU was overheating severely—so I attempted a BIOS update. Here’s what I did:
- Installed the BIOS update to a 8GB fat32 drive
- Didn’t clear CMOS (though it was recently changed)
- Placed a thumb drive on top of the case (not in the flash port)
- Followed the guide to enter BIOS and flash it
- The update completed, but the system never booted again.
The PC is running but shows no signal. The motherboard has a flash button and a flash drive port. Should I power down, clear CMOS, install the drive, and press the flash button? Thanks, Zach.
Additionally, I haven't interacted with the PC yet; it's still operational and has been running for roughly an hour now.
I’d probably turn it off right now and check how it behaves. From my experience, MSI has been quite useful when things go wrong. - I don’t clear CMOS for BIOS updates. It wouldn’t hurt, but this shouldn’t have caused any trouble. - I’m writing this from a machine equipped with an MSI Z690 Edge Wifi DDR4 board, which I’ve updated through every BIOS release using just a standard USB port on the front, not the flash port. No problems here. So the “wrong port” shouldn’t have affected you. This board has debug LEDs; are any of them lit? The last MSI board I had an issue with was a flash failure—my machine froze and then restarted after a tech recommended a different keyboard connection, and it worked fine once again.
It varies based on the flashing technique you employ. One unique USB port is reserved for BIOS updates via the rear I/O flash button—other ports won’t function. NVM indicates you followed the typical BIOS procedure. I didn’t erase CMOS prior to installing my MSI board. The process shouldn’t require an hour, so the update session was quite fast. Overall, you’ll need to restart or power off your PC before proceeding. Personally, if a restart fails (as @OhioYJ mentioned), attempting a reflash through the BIOS flash button might help.
Thanks a lot for your assistance. I removed the USB after powering down hard, then restarted several times by pressing the power button. It’s now working normally again. I verified the BIOS version and it updated properly! Great tip! Appreciate it!
