Over the past few weeks I've struggled to upgrade Windows to version 1709 because my main drive uses the MBR and converting it to GPT isn't straightforward without reinstalling. With the latest news about Specter and Meltdown, should I be concerned about needing a full reinstall just for these updates, or can they still apply to older versions like Windows 10 1703?

Don't worry, the spectre and meltdown are exaggerated. The real impact is limited to about 10%, and it's usually not noticeable. Upgrade and stay safe.

The issue is updating due to unsupported UEFI firmware layout.
