Hey there, I'm working on a new computer setup and would love some advice. Since I'm in cybersecurity, I need a versatile workstation with strong performance. My main priorities are lots of CPU cores, top connectivity options, and maximum RAM capacity. I handle heavy code compilation, machine learning tasks, and often run virtualized networks. As an audiophile, I also enjoy experimenting with audio equipment.
I've been using the same machine since 2011 and keep it updated regularly. I'm aiming for a build that could last at least another decade. Based on what you mentioned, I'm leaning toward high-core-count processors, ECC memory, and plenty of RAM—ideally expandable to terabytes someday.
For now, I'm focusing on future-proofing: lots of NVMe slots for RAID, multiple SATA ports for HDDs, 10GB SSDs, Ethernet, USB 3.2/Thunderbolt, and an optical interface to avoid cluttering the case. Direct storage features would be a plus too.

A standard Threadripper delivers cores plus consumer tools, but without sufficient RAM. Threadripper PRO might be a viable choice if you manage to secure one. PCIe 5.0 is still in early stages of mass production; expect some systems to support it by year-end. Currently, there are no ready-to-buy direct storage solutions, but Linux already supports all necessary APIs for P2P DMA, allowing custom development.
