Hey there, I'm working on a new computer setup and would love some advice. Since I'm in cybersecurity, I need a versatile workstation with strong performance. My main priorities are lots of CPU cores, top connectivity options, and maximum RAM capacity. I handle heavy code compilation, machine learning tasks, and often run virtualized networks. As an audiophile, I also enjoy experimenting with audio equipment.

I've been using the same machine since 2011 and keep it updated regularly. I'm aiming for a build that could last at least another decade. Based on what you mentioned, I'm leaning toward high-core-count processors, ECC memory, and plenty of RAM—ideally expandable to terabytes someday.

For now, I'm focusing on future-proofing: lots of NVMe slots for RAID, multiple SATA ports for HDDs, 10GB SSDs, Ethernet, USB 3.2/Thunderbolt, and an optical interface to avoid cluttering the case. Direct storage features would be a plus too.

Any suggestions on components that fit this vision?

Absolutely yes. I can replicate full server setups. Picture 64-128GB RAM servers running actively, with 10-20 machines already exceeding capacity—leaving no space for main OS processes. Right now I need extra external hardware, which I want to eliminate. Ideally, I'd start with 1TB of RAM if the motherboard supports it, so I can handle multiple TBs for future growth. Still, balancing size and expandability means I might consider building a mini data center, though space is limited at home.

It's not inexpensive, yet they are available. https://www.tyan.com/Motherboards_S8253_S8253GM4NE-2T (The third generation isn't been released for long, so it'll be a while before you see many workstation boards. But this should happen soon.)

Xeons offer ample RAM but insufficient processing units. EPYCs provide both cores and memory, though they miss consumer conveniences. A standard Threadripper delivers cores plus consumer tools, but without sufficient RAM. Threadripper PRO might be a viable choice if you manage to secure one. PCIe 5.0 is still in early stages of mass production; expect some systems to support it by year-end. Currently, there are no ready-to-buy direct storage solutions, but Linux already supports all necessary APIs for P2P DMA, allowing custom development.
