I returned from a short trip and the PC didn't start properly, even though it had been on for three years. I ran the built-in troubleshooter but it didn't help. I tried fixing the BCD, checked the drive letter in the command prompt, and entered safe mode, which worked. I looked up solutions online, exited safe mode, and tried the BCD repair again. Still no luck. I booted back into safe mode, but when it loads the Windows logo it freezes, cycles a few times, and then returns to the repair screen. I've tried several times but can't get back into safe mode. After reinstalling via a USB drive, the PC rebooted and installed Windows correctly, but I ended up with four old Windows folders on C:/ while my current files stayed in the oldest one. Everything seems fine now. I decided to shut down, plug in my external HDD, and make a backup. Instead of shutting down, the PC restarted and started freezing again while trying to boot. The next time it boots, it goes back to the screen saying Windows couldn't start. I'm surprised it booted into the safe mode of the clean installation. I'm worried about losing my data if I can't get into safe mode again. With only one chance, what should I do to figure out the problem?
