my sister's laptop monitors aren't functioning properly. when the laptop powers on and a second monitor is connected, everything works. the issue doesn't suggest damage to the monitors themselves. opening the troubleshoot menu shows the first monitor operates normally. running in safe mode has no effect. i've also tried updating windows, but it hasn't resolved the problem. this appears to be a Lenovo laptop with an i3-1005G1 processor and built-in GPU.

You might attempt removing a RAM stick and starting the laptop if it has more than one and isn’t soldered. Visit the manufacturer’s site to reinstall drivers. If needed, reset the BIOS to its default settings. On the keyboard, press the FN key and the monitor function. The absence of a display in safe mode is alarming and may indicate a hardware issue. It’s unlikely anyone can assist without further physical inspection to diagnose by swapping components.

You're checking the troubleshoot options and thinking it might point to a software problem.

It should function properly since it uses only essential Windows drivers and removes most unnecessary components. Consider testing with a Linux live USB for complete assurance. If it fails, the issue likely lies in hardware.

I considered switching to safe mode, removing the video drivers, and restarting in normal settings. It seems there might be a configuration issue with the card that forces it to display an unsupported resolution or bad refresh rate. Alternatively, a setting could be enabling output disablement for the main monitor. Removing the drivers should clear all video-related configurations, allowing future installations to function properly.

It seems the issue might be linked to the driver configuration or display settings. As suggested, follow @mariushm's advice to remove and then reinstall the drivers via the external monitor. For a thorough removal, use DDU: https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/dis...nload.html. When reinstalling, choose "clean install" for a fresh setup.

I kept trying to fix the system by restarting drivers, but then I pressed F12 to make it brighter, and suddenly the screen worked again. Now I’m planning to sell my gadgets and move to the woods.
