Unusual occurrences discovered in an old Half-Life title
While playing Half-Life Deathmatch: Source, I entered an empty server with no players or bots. It immediately dropped me into the action. Sometimes certain levels are more unstable than others during server updates (for instance, varying item duplication rates based on glitch intensity, or audio effects not playing properly). The odd issue I discovered only appears when joining another player's server—don’t set up your own, it’s pointless. On indoor maps on empty servers, I occasionally catch distant footsteps or doors creaking; I investigate, only to see an empty space. There are no bots present, and no other players ever show up. I keep checking the server to verify. Is this an audio glitch? I don’t see it on MotorCity Madhouse or Hostile Intent (the server runs dms_spookface1 24/7). This strange problem isn’t found on any servers with active bots either. Anyone know why this happens? Or is there another reason the game feels outdated?
I've never played a source game, yet this title seems like it could be a horror-themed map. I imagine the distant sounds and opening doors are meant to create tension, which matches what you're experiencing—this feels unique compared to other maps.
I don't notice any footsteps or door sounds on dms_spookface1. (everything clean) It shows up only on certain maps—no other players, no bots, just indoor maps. I reviewed the sound files of every map on my copy of HLDMS. The full maps and their details load when a new level is installed that I haven't played before. Running these maps solo on a self-hosted server and going away leaves no audio traces. Checking all the files gives the same result: nothing, nothing like what I heard. But this glitch only appears when joining an empty server. If it's a mod, it’s completely broken. Still, who would modify a game that Valve left abandoned years ago?
It still works, though it might just be a feature added for the current setup rather than a real issue. It could also be a bug, or someone might have shared it from unreliable places and thought it was amusing. ¯\(ツ)_/¯ That’s probably what people think... I guess it’s not too strange, maybe.
