Hi there, I hope you're doing okay. My friend is facing some trouble with his internet connection lately. Because I'm not very familiar with networking, it's been a bit tough to find the right answers. The situation started about a week ago when a Comcast technician visited his place to upgrade his internet. They installed a new router—Comcast's XB7 model—and increased his speed to 400 Mbps. At first, everything looked normal. But after playing games later that evening, he noticed big ping changes and packet loss, especially in League of Legends. Small fluctuations and lost packets can really disrupt gameplay. He thought it was just a bad connection that night, but the issue kept happening and hasn't improved.

We tried several things to figure it out: we ran a traceroute to the League of Legends server in Chicago, where he lives. The results were inconsistent—especially on the second hop. His ping times varied a lot, sometimes around 12-20ms and other times much higher. It didn't seem to depend on the time of day, and it looked similar to other IPs, like his Google router. I live a bit farther away but use the same ISP and router. My pings were consistently much lower, never exceeding 30ms.

This inconsistency in his traceroute pointed to something unusual about the second hop’s IP address. I found out it was a private network address—possibly a Bogon or private IP. That made me wonder if that was the source of the problem. I wasn’t sure if it would help, but it’s definitely something we should investigate further.

Some people suggested contacting Comcast directly. They’ve already sent three technicians, but they mostly just fixed wiring or replaced parts without solving the core issue. Recently, a higher-level technician came in and mentioned his latency felt like it took megaseconds. Comcast is a big company, but they’re still trying to escalate the problem through their support system. It’s unclear how long this will take, and how many more visits he’ll need before they confirm his connection is working.

Other details we discovered include a lot of router logs generated since installation, while my own router shows no activity. I can share some screenshots of those logs, but I’m not sure if they’ll help much.

Additionally, the problem isn’t limited to League of Legends—my friend has experienced similar issues with other games, like Tabletop Simulator, where he sees big ping spikes and sometimes disconnects.

What should we do next? Any suggestions or resources could be really useful here?
