Unusual FPS declines are happening.
Unusual scenario: When I keep FPS uncapped in games like Realm Royale or Fortnite, I see around 120 FPS on High settings. It stays steady regardless of PC settings, but drops below 100 to 85 every few seconds. Never hits under 85. If I cap it using Vsync at 60, the frame rate drops to 60, then often falls to 50 or 55 after about 15 seconds. CPU and GPU usage stay around 60% and 50%. I believe limiting FPS should have resolved the stuttering. Need help?
Tell me your processor type, GPU model, and RAM capacity. Also let me know if you're using a laptop or desktop.
I’m not familiar with your games, but some titles can reduce FPS in specific map sections when Vsync is enabled—likely to maintain smooth gameplay. I’ve noticed this in Forza Motorsport 7 and Sea of Thieves. To handle it, I use Riva Tuner to lock my FPS.
Did you disable Vsync and then set the FPS lock? Also, with your configuration, 60 FPS is likely the maximum achievable in today’s shooters. Your performance is limited by your CPU and memory, so moving to an i5-2400 or higher with at least 8GB RAM will make a big difference.
What's slowing you down? Locking FPS keeps GPU and CPU usage around equal, RAM usage stays low—only a few gigabytes are active during games. Disabling Vsync didn't fix the issue.
It might be due to thermal throttling on the CPU or GPU, even if usage is low.
Your setup isn't high enough for top-tier gaming today, but it should still run Fortnite at reduced settings. If you're seeing 50-60 FPS without stuttering when using Vsync, keeping it on is probably a good idea for smoother performance. Rapid FPS changes can lead to stuttering, so locking your FPS or enabling Vsync helps. If you're thinking about upgrading for better speed, spending around $175 to $250 on used components could be enough.
