Unusual AM5 performance or possible RAM issue detected.
I've recently upgraded my setup to AM5 and am encountering memory problems. I'm trying to connect with other users who might have similar experiences and need some advice. Here are the details: My system includes an MSI B650 Mag Mortar Ryzen 5 7600x with G.Skill 32-TZ5RK, RTX 3070Ti, NHU-12s chromax.black. Everything seemed normal during assembly, but when I powered it on, I noticed the CPU and DRAM indicators lit up red and orange respectively. I quickly searched online for solutions but found nothing relevant. My first attempt was to re-seat the cooler and inspect the pins, but no issues were found. I then tried placing each RAM stick in a different slot, starting with just one in the leftmost and last slot, which worked temporarily. Switching to another stick didn't help either. Eventually, I learned that DDR5 memory and AM5 can be unstable, and after more research, I realized this might be a single faulty module. Despite replacing it several times (about four out of five attempts), the problem persisted. I ran Windows and used benchmarking tools; the CPU overheated quickly, hitting 95°C without throttling, but maintaining boost frequency. I then reapplied thermal paste to the cooler and tried again multiple times, but nothing resolved the issue. I ordered parts from Amazon for replacement, but I prefer not to wait for shipments and want a working system. I apologize if my setup is confusing, and thank you in advance for any guidance you can provide.
The DDR5 TridentZ RGB kits all feature the "-TZ5RK" socket and include a new Integrated Memory Controller for DDR5. Intel encountered similar challenges when transitioning to DDR5 on 12th Gen, and AMD has faced the same problems. Verify your motherboard’s latest BIOS—MSi released an update in January 2023 with AGESA version 1.0.0.4. For dual memory modules, connect them in slots #2 and #4. Test stability without EXPO/XMP settings first. If it doesn’t run smoothly under default JEDEC parameters, avoid attempting overclocking via EXPO/XMP. Older Ryzen models aimed for performance up to 95°C continuously; once they hit 95°C or higher, they ramp up again until reaching 96°C before slowing down. To lower heat output, enable ECO Mode in BIOS, adjust power and current limits, allow the CPU to cool down, and consider reducing boost frequency.
Oh my bad, I didn't realise that wasn't the model no. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09TPY273P?p...ct_details this is the link from the exact set I bought. As for XMP and such, the one stick runs fine with and without XMP enabled so I'll try updating the bios and get back to you.
It matches the memory kit listed on the QVL for the MSi MAG B650M Mortar. The update was last made in February 2023. Try the newest BIOS version.
The BIOS was updated to the release on January 6th, but nothing has changed regarding RAM. Only one LED works in slots 2 and 4, while the other doesn’t function at all and only displays two identical LEDs. The RGB lights up, but there’s no additional output beyond that.
Oh really?! You have tried with just the potentially faulty stick, and you get the CPU + DRAM debug LEDs, right? There is a chance that the second memory stick is faulty. I see that it is sold and shipped by a third party. Are you able to return or exchange with the seller? Usually you need to return the entire kit, and cannot just return one stick. Otherwise, you could reach out to G.Skill directly, since memory have lifetime warranty.
I purchased a fresh set of memory modules. The original kit I received had a faulty DIMM, which is definitely odd. I'm not sure if this has been reported before, and the EZ debug lights indicating the CPU was idle still puzzled me a bit, but it turned out to be resolved.
