I own an older X470 with a 2700X, upgraded to 5800X and 7800 XT about two years back. It has performed exceptionally well, offering great value over its lifespan. About three months ago, it began showing blue-screen errors occasionally. I decided to replace the storage with a 2 TB SSD and reinstalled Windows in the hope of improving stability. Unfortunately, the problem persisted. Recently, the system has become much more unstable—BSODs occur several times weekly, and some applications crash unexpectedly. My stability logs reveal daily crashes alongside system failures, with no clear pattern or consistent error message. This suggests memory issues, possibly from RAM, motherboard, or CPU. I’m not ready to start a new build right now; I wanted this setup to last into the next generation of CPUs, but I also don’t want to invest heavily in troubleshooting an aging machine. Any advice on possible fixes would be appreciated? When I replaced the SSD a while back, I also re-seated the RAM and CPU and updated the motherboard firmware. I considered buying a budget 500-series board, but even at around $120, it seems like a waste unless it resolves the problems.
My experience shows that Zen 2/3 setups tend to face this issue often. Over the past five years, I've dealt with similar challenges on my R5 3600, R5 5600X, and R5 5600. I've tried three different CPUs, used various motherboards (X370, X570, B550), experimented with four RAM kits, and switched power supplies in an attempt to resolve the problem. What stands out is that all three CPUs performed well initially, but instability gradually appeared. The only solution that kept my system running smoothly was using just one stick of RAM with looser timings (DDR4-3200 16-20-20-40). Switching to two sticks or tighter timings always led to crashes and blue screens. I can't confirm the cause, but I suspect it relates to AMD's memory controller design. Before Intel's issues became widespread, I was confident my next CPU would be Intel, but now I'm unsure about either brand. I’m settling for whatever setup gives me stability, even if it means compromising on raw performance.
Great suggestion, I verified it worked initially with thousands of mistakes. Then I checked each stick individually and errors per stick. I also adjusted one stick to an empty slot and reduced speed to JEDEC, but errors persisted. Likely indicates a CPU problem.
It might stem from issues with the memory controller on the CPU or the motherboard's memory layout. This is why memory errors can be tricky—they could come from the RAM, the CPU, or even the board itself. As discussed in my earlier post, I faced the same issue on the same CPU setup, and changing the RAM didn’t resolve it, leading me to suspect a problem with the CPU.
However, having multiple RAM modules face problems simultaneously is very unusual. A fault in the memory controller on the CPU chip would also lead to memory issues. I own a system with DDR4 RAM as well, so I might check that later to confirm.
It seems I’ve got the perfect reason to start fresh. Even if it wasn’t my original plan, I’m not really bothered at all! Creating a new system feels super thrilling!
