unreliable RX 3080 performance with no clear cause, likely VRAM issues leading to crashes and complete shutdowns
this began in February with video transmission issues and quickly worsened to the point where launching games became impossible. I performed several reinstalls—both in December and recently—and updated drivers, including DDU. Every test on OCCT passed without errors. Benchmarks and gameplay crashes were consistent; my PC ran smoothly under stress tests, all fans at maximum speed, RAM passed Memtest, and no error logs appeared. Only when I used memtestcl or memtestg80 did thousands of errors surface. When I tried AIDA, crashes occurred only if the CPU was tested with the GPU on, otherwise everything worked. The GPU reached 75 degrees max. So far, I've run various benchmarks, including Heaven Crashes, GTA Enhanced, and Wolfenstein Young Blood; after about three seconds of gameplay, crashes happened. This card is roughly three years old, and it’s becoming a major problem for me—especially since GPUs are hard to find, and both ASUS and the store I bought it from had no warranty. Is my graphics card failing? Why does this happen?
I completed a full test on MemTest86 but someone suggested lowering power usage to 60%. I adjusted power settings in Afterburner, and the system no longer crashes. I also changed core clock to -250 for stability. It’s been running smoothly for about 20 minutes now—originally it crashed within the first two seconds. I’m wondering if the card needs fresh thermal paste and pads, even though burn tests show it reached 75°C. The voltage might be too high, causing overheating. Hope this is the fix.
