Supermicro x7db3 board with dual xeon e5450 processors. The situation turned intriguing: if port splitting is feasible, could reversing it work? Apparently, it isn’t.

You're asking whether to merge your two 8-port connections into one 16-port setup or vice versa. It looks like the board doesn't allow splitting ports, and combining PCIe slots isn't an option. Since the server is outdated and slow, boosting PCIe speed won't help much if the CPU struggles to keep up.
