Unreal Engine 4 game performance problems—reduced graphics card activity plus decreased frames per second.
I am experiencing poor performance, low frame rates, and stuttering when playing Unreal Engine 4 games (PUBG, Gears 5, Jedi: Fallen Order, and Borderlands 3). My system specifications include a Ryzen 2600 processor, an MSI RTX 2060 graphics card, 16GB HyperX Predator memory at 3200MHz CL16, an MSI Tomahawk B450 motherboard, a Samsung NVMe SSD, and secondary SATA SSDs, connected to an ASUS VG279Q 144Hz display running in G-Sync compatible mode. Despite utilizing my GPU and CPU at 40-60%, the CPU is not reaching its limit. Gears 5 consistently delivers 30-50 FPS with a GPU utilization of only 40%, regardless of graphical settings. Jedi: Fallen Order shows slightly improved performance, averaging around 60 FPS with a GPU utilization of approximately 60%, occasionally dropping to the 50s. Changing graphical settings has no noticeable impact on performance. Borderlands 3 consistently dips into the 40s with any settings applied, rendering it barely playable. I have attempted numerous troubleshooting steps over several months, including NVIDIA Control Panel adjustments (Threaded Optimization, Energy Profile), Windows Graphics Settings (High Performance), repeated GPU driver reinstalls via DDU, RAM overclocking to XMP Profile 1, CPU and GPU factory resets, disabling secondary displays, setting a frame rate cap in Rivatuner, updating chipset drivers, ensuring Windows 10 is up-to-date, and closing background applications. I have also tested Red Dead Redemption 2, which runs flawlessly at 60-90 FPS with 98% GPU utilization. I suspect the issue is not hardware-related and am seeking advice on potential solutions to resolve this persistent problem.
I updated the BIOS to version 7C02v17 (the latest before 3000 series support), reset all settings, and the result is significantly improved performance: my Gears framerates are now in the triple digits, Borderlands framerates doubled, and overall system stability is excellent.
