Unpredictable restarts, occasional SSD failures, eerie computer issues
So my old PC never really worked well. I thought upgrading most components would solve the problems. Unfortunately, it didn’t. I’m dealing with a bunch of tricky issues: D and E drives sometimes disappear when I use the latest BIOS (pressing F8h). They show up, but trying to run anything from them causes errors. Booting takes a long time on the last stable BIOS (F7), probably because it keeps running memory training. There’s occasional screen glitch—like the upper half of the display shifting to the lower part for a short time. I’m not sure if it’s just cables, but given my past GPU problems and the fact that my newest one failed within two days due to graphics issues, I’m worried. Recently, the system keeps rebooting unexpectedly, often while I’m using something demanding like YouTube. It’s hard to find a clear cause in Event Viewer.
Here are my specs:
- Motherboard: Gigabyte X670E Aorus Master (with F7 BIOS)
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7950X
- RAM: G.Skill F5-6000J3238G32TZ5N (2x32GB, 6000MHz)
- HDD: Seagate FireCuda 520 1TB (ZP1000GM30002)
- SSD: Seagate FireCuda 530 4TB (ZP4000GM30013)
- ESS: Seagate FireCuda 530 4TB (ZP4000GM30013)
- Extra drive: Samsung 970 PRO 1TB (planned Linux install)
- PSU: Seasonic PRIME PX-1300 (1300W, modular)
- GPU: ASUS ROG Strix 3090 Gaming OC with EK waterblock & active backplate
- Case: 200mm Cooler Master Gen4 PCIe riser (active backplate prevents fit)
- Previous GPU: 3080 Ti (still broken after warranty replacement)
- Latest attempt: ASRock 7900 XTX 24G OC Aqua (showed graphics glitches, caused random reboots)
I’m considering sending the E drive back to Seagate for testing. Any advice would be appreciated.
Hard drive Sentinel supports RAM operation without XMP. Most recent chipset drivers are available directly from AMD.
I've executed SeaTools and confirmed no issues. I'm not comfortable with hard disk sentinel. Testing RAM without XMP is something I haven't done before. It's the newest chipset from AMD.
Further odd occurrences after repeated attempts to install kb5022282. The machine restarted, emitting three long beeps, then became locked on boot code 99 (Super IO init). After another reboot, Windows remained stuck on the boot screen for some time before progressing to a blue screen error labeled "CLOCK WATCHDOG TIMEOUT." On the third attempt, everything reloaded. I suspect trying RAM without XMP might help, but what will happen if that resolves the problem? I already have my second RAM module installed. Updated: Yesterday I began by reinstalling the original power supply, wondering if the restart issue began before or after the replacement in my attempt to address the 7900 XTX problem.
The PC appears stable thanks to BIOS updates, physical NVMe drive adjustments, and GPU driver improvements. There are a few unusual occurrences—like a screen going blank after startup and occasional unexpected reboots—that raise the possibility of a motherboard problem.
Just wanted to wrap up this thread, in case anyone needs a reminder. It turned out the problem was likely multiple factors. Swapping the PSU resolved the random reboots, updating the motherboard appears to have fixed the SSD concern (though I haven’t fully tested it yet), and new drivers seem to have addressed the warranty replacement issue with the 7900 XTX.
