Unpredictable FPS fluctuations observed in Minecraft and Terraria games
Hello everyone, I’ve been facing some performance problems with my laptop since November 2017. It’s an Asus thin and light model with 16GB RAM, an i7-7700hq processor, and a GTX 1060 graphics card. I’m currently running the latest version of Windows 10. Recently, while playing a Minecraft modpack called SkyFactory4, I’ve experienced frequent drops to single-digit frames even when nothing intense was running. These drops lasted from a few seconds to a couple of minutes before returning to around 60fps. At first, I thought it was just the mods affecting performance. This past weekend, while playing Terraria with a friend, I noticed similar issues—sometimes around 20 FPS for a few seconds or minutes, then back to normal for hours. I’ve also tested vanilla Minecraft and single-player Terraria, but the same problems appear, though less often and less severe in vanilla. I’ve checked Task Manager, but it didn’t show any resource hogs, no antivirus scans, and both CPU and GPU usage stayed low (20-30%), with memory at about 50%. Temperatures were normal, around 70-72°C. I’m not very skilled at troubleshooting, and most online guides seem aimed at people dealing with steady low FPS, so I’ve tried everything I can think of. Any suggestions on how to identify the problem would be greatly appreciated!
If installed, remove GeForce Experience. Battery Boot and ShadowPlay may affect performance on some laptops. Remove your existing graphics driver using DDU from the provided link, ensuring you run Clean and Restart. Upgrade to the newest driver from the official site, omitting GeForce Experience.
Check the guidance from @PorkishPig. Then restore the operating system.
