Gamespot shares his thoughts on Borderlands 3's trailer

The trailer didn’t quite meet expectations, resembling a mid-game update for MMO titles. It featured more weapons and new content, but overall it fell short.
For context, I’m not a fan of Borderlands 3. The visual style and gameplay don’t appeal to me. I particularly dislike 2K titles. Still, I appreciate the random loot system, which reminds me of Diablo 3—though I don’t play hardcore. I’ve enjoyed other loot-based shooters like Warframe, Fallout 4, and Destiny 2, though I’ve given up on many of them for various reasons.
In honesty, the art style is a significant deterrent. Even turning off cel shading for better performance didn’t help. I often get recommendations from Telltale Games, but I can’t stand their style either.
People frequently claim cartoonish art is more appealing than realistic, and I agree—15 years old looks surprisingly polished compared to many MMOs, especially Elden Ring.
But Borderlands games feel outdated, relying on a formula that’s been around for a while. While the first game was innovative with its FPS-RPG blend and Diablo-style loot, the subsequent titles stuck to the same approach. The expansion felt like a continuation rather than an evolution.
The trailer itself reinforces this feeling. It’s a standard promotional clip, and the criticism seems more about expectations than actual content changes.
I understand why fans of the series might be upset, but I think most people just want their favorite formula to stay consistent. If Blizzard changes it to something entirely different, I’d protest. But right now, there’s nothing new in the trailer beyond what we already know.
And for those unfamiliar with the series, a simple explanation is enough—other than the story.
The Borderlands 3 trailer gives the impression of being similar to previous entries without significant changes, which might disappoint fans seeking a fresh experience. It seems this is exactly what the community expects from the new installment. If you don't enjoy the series, it's fine—there are plenty of other options available now.
Well, when you look at the trailers, it wasn't as impressive to me. Still, I liked the last two titles, even though I didn't play the pre-sequel because it didn't catch my interest. I just hope they release another great villain next time.
they are good games yes, but a lazy one. yet the fandom of the series confuses me. by baffle I mean it, I’m a blizzard fan and if Blizzard makes this lazy move, fans will be upset. see what happened with Diablo Immortal.
i didn’t notice how much has changed from 1 to 2 and to pre-sequel, all the same gameplay, weapons that reload like grenades, some Diablo 2 inspired skill tree, the same smug handsome villan, and that nonsense.
i get it some people don’t want things they like changed, but this isn’t a trailer for new players, even for me who’ve played both on Steam free play.
look at the old faces still here, look we make some cool guns for you, look it walks isn’t it cool?
than tell me how it isn’t an expansion of Borderlands 2?
bethesda got hit by selling story-based DLC for Fallout 4 and then why is 2K praised for recycling ideas from a dusty board?
i really want to like this game, everything about this game fits my preferences, but overall it just pushes me away. even with visual tweaks that remove cel shading. i’d rather play bad PvP games like Fortnite or PUBG than this ugly piece of software.
Just watched the trailer and I'm really pleased with it. BL2 has been on my mind for about six or seven years now as "The Last Good Game". A fresh title with exactly the same systems and without the Pre-Sequel's somewhat dull level design would definitely be a great experience for me, especially after spending a couple hundred hours. There haven't been many games I've enjoyed since 2012, so this is going to be a nice surprise.
I understand not being interested if you didn't enjoy BL2, and I can see why people want games that improve or upgrade, but I don't think there are any sequels that really do that. BL2 did have some potential, but BL1 always felt more like a marketing push than a complete game. I didn't even bother finishing it until after BL2 was released (though I played Firestone around 20 times). The Pre-Sequel felt more like a regular sequel, with poor level design and odd features just to add something.
I have no idea if BL3 will be good, but the trailer made me smile. I'm excited about its release.
