They are merely original equipment manufacturer keys. Companies such as Dell or HP add them to their prebuilt systems. You can simply turn on Windows using these codes, just like when you purchase a license in a store.

When previous licenses were converted to Windows 10 at no cost and repurposed, it should function properly. The key doesn't require an upgrade.
