For more than a month I've been using my old laptop to connect my wireless network to my PC. The router is in the hallway near the exit doors, and my PC is in my room across from the kitchen and living room. Running a cable through half the house isn't possible. One day I reinstalled Windows on the laptop and tried setting everything up again, but I still got an "Unidentified network" error and couldn't share my internet via the ICS device. I ran the troubleshooter, unplugged and plugged it back in, restarted, and even reformatted both PC and laptop, but nothing worked. Any suggestions besides getting a proper Wi-Fi card or adapter soon?

Are you sure the right network drivers are set up before proceeding?

I used the standard Windows drivers and the network card in my laptop functions are normal. My plan is to try Windows 8.1 to revert back since I removed the hard drive from my laptop for a PC, which gave me more space, and it worked well during a few reinstalls before now it seems reluctant to do so.

Not much daily activity, but I really need assistance—I can't even move files or handle anything.

I believe there’s an option in the firewall settings to choose whether your network is public or private. Since Windows 10 didn’t work for me, I switched to Linux.

When you mention tethering your wireless connection, are you referring to using a Wi-Fi router? This means connecting your PC directly to the laptop via an Ethernet cable and sharing the internet that way. You might want to consider upgrading your PC with a budget wireless card or adding a Wi-Fi extender with a LAN port for better coverage. Clarify your setup so I can understand how you’re getting internet on both devices. Sometimes a simple restart or adjusting the router position helps resolve issues.
