Unexpected issues with the Asus HD 7850 device.
Hi, thanks for reading!
I chose to purchase an Asus Radeon HD 7850 (HD7850-DC2-2GD5) for a system built in 2012. It was quite affordable.
In the past two 7850 models I've had, they easily overclock, which is typical.
However, I own another one from Powercolor that also overclocks well, especially with low voltage settings.
Reaching a core clock of 1050mhz (the default overclock limit) was always sufficient for me.
When I got the Asus card, I first tested it using 3DMark11 and Heaven for stability, sticking to the default clocks.
Then I attempted overclocking.
What surprised me was how high the card's default voltage is—1.210v—and its ASIC quality exceeds 90%.
I thought with all that power, overclocking would be straightforward, but I managed no more than 950mhz without crashing in Unigine Heaven after a few minutes.
In the past, I've overclocked many cards and I'm not a beginner, so I'm asking myself:
Am I doing something wrong?
My PSU is MSI Afterburner and it handles another 7850 easily. It's a new Corsair CX430, which isn't a top-tier power supply, but it's sufficient for the rig.
Temperatures are normal, staying above 70º.
What do you think?
Overclocking isn't guaranteed, I know...
And sorry for my English, since it's far from perfect...
Thanks for your help.
Gabriel
I believe the GPU isn't quite as strong as the others you've used before. If you're familiar with the setup, there might be more to consider.
