Hi, I set up my PC around 2014 and have been away from it for a while. Recently, a friend lent me an i5 4690K that’s running fine at stock speeds, but it’s struggling under a consistent 4.2 GHz overclock. I’ve been experimenting for about two weeks, but I’m still not sure what’s causing the issue. Could anyone share some tips or help me run benchmarks to pinpoint the problem? Thanks ahead! My build includes: case – Fractal Design R4, PSU – Corsair RM650, motherboard – Gigabyte Z87 OC, overclock – Noctua NH-D14, RAM – Corsair Vengeance 1600 MHz, HDD – WD Green 1TB, CPU – Intel Core i5 4690K.

I've completed several benchmarks against similar CPUs, but they consistently lag behind expectations. Loading times are unusually slow. Prior to installing an i3, I ran tests and found it significantly faster than an i5. The benchmark I used was CPU-Z, which reported a multi-core score of 380.
Consider restarting Windows. Such performance problems can arise after modifying key system components. Also, think about installing an SSD for your operating system if you don’t already have one, since it will greatly enhance your system’s responsiveness.
Great plan to reinstall. I’ll give it another shot. The SSD is listed first for replacement, but I need to wait until the end of the month before installing it. After that, I’ll attempt to reinstall it on the SSD and see if it improves things. CPU speed shouldn’t change much between HDD and SSD.
Thanks to everyone for your assistance. I checked more online and found someone else with the same CPU and motherboard setup. They also had the same issue. It turns out my motherboard has a safe switch you can toggle. Initially it was set to 800 MHz, but I flipped it back and now it’s running at the normal base speed of 3.5 GHz. Appreciate all the help!
