Unusual. Defective processors are pretty uncommon. They usually undergo testing before being shipped out, which makes it ideal if they left the plant and turned out faulty. It just doesn’t occur that often.
I had spoken too soon... Everything was good for ~1 hour, now i have the same problems again ... My favorite test is blender-cycles by now, the PC crashes in seconds... Prime95 runs stable as long i dont open ryzen-master additionally. That pc is really picky at how it want to crash.. xD How likely do you think it's an problem with the motherboard? I researched a little bit and a lot of "the blackscren-crash and cpu led lighten up problems" seems to have to do with an msi b450-max... Is it possible that MSI messed up ther zen3 compatibility update or something??? Or since it worked for some time could it be that, the vrms overheat after some time?
I could review temperatures and fan blockages (that 5900 isn’t a great chip) and attempt a fresh reset before launching the component launcher, though I’m running low on options.
I also purchased a new motherboard (ASRock B550 Extreme4). Everything is working properly for over a week now. Probably the VRM on the MSI B450 Tomahawk Max isn't up to the job for the 5900X... I'm not sure about it.
It would be unexpected yet potentially feasible. The board is old enough that it could appear on the motherboard tier list in the motherboards section. This would be verifiable there.
Hey, I’m facing the same problem too. In Red Dead Redemption 2 I can’t even play for more than 30 seconds and suddenly the screen goes black while my monitor and peripherals stay on. The CPU light turns red on the motherboard after that. It happens randomly in different games too. This game seems to be the only one where it starts without me being able to play properly. I’m using these specs: Windows 11 Pro 64-bit, Ryzen 9 5950X, 2x8GB RAM, Crucial Ballistix DDR4-3600, RTX TUF 3080 OC GPU, SAMSUNG 970 EVO PLUS 1TB SSD, and a Seasonic FOCUS 850W PSU. I’m considering upgrading to a B550 motherboard to fix this.
You’re looking at some of the most demanding and power-hungry components available for an AMD gaming rig. I’m curious to know the temperatures. The 5950 chip is larger than the one from the x470 era. AM4 has been around for a while. We really don’t understand the VRM configuration on this board, and it’s unclear if that was the root cause of any issues. Motherboards are complex—definitely possible—but with so many hot parts involved, checking temperatures first would make sense. It might not be useful, though. There are several sources worth considering. Maybe you’re short on a suitable PSU? The 3080 is known for being noisy and often overloading PSUs that aren’t powerful enough. My understanding was that temperatures were normal, and others with more experience confirmed that. Here’s a screenshot from Red Dead Redemption 2 I played yesterday after it stopped working. https://ibb.co/V2d7bZW The issue seemed resolved by turning off Core Precision Boost and Precision Boost Overdrive, which brought the CPU back to its default 3.4GHz. This was a quick fix, but I’m not ready to keep it on long-term since I’m missing out on higher performance. Could the motherboard be too limited for those boosts? I’m checking the VRM tier list and hoping to find a suitable S-tier board.
