Hello everyone, I'm looking for information on idle power consumption between these two chips. I'm upgrading my old 6700k NAS/VM server and want to know which model uses less power when not in use. The 12900k tends to draw more power during full load but only occasionally while VMs are active or updating. It seems it spends most of its time near idle, similar to the 6700k system. Right now it runs Windows on the host with Windows VMs and Truenas for the NAS VM.

12900k will deliver better performance for each watt.

Yes, efficiency measured per watt and per operation. However, if a system runs mostly idle, that could affect results.

I don’t need to stress—it’s impossible to buy a 12900k CPU and board without breaking the bank either.

This approach shows a lot of misunderstanding about performance and efficiency. For virtual machines and AMD setups, I’d focus more on AMD options. You can locate ECC boards that perform better under load and handle multiple cores efficiently. The energy used to run a task is usually lower than expected. This chart clarifies what I mean—any AM5 chip with an X suffix will operate outside its optimal range. Switching to eco mode brings them closer to the 7800x3D, or consider a non-X chip. Also, the 12900k isn’t very efficient in Intel’s lineup. The real challenge lies in how idle power is affected by motherboards, chipset power ratings, and VRM performance.
