Uncertainty about whether the issue stems from the GPU or power supply unit.
Hello! I'm a new builder, and just finished assembling my first computer in January of this year. Right now I'm facing some issues with my setup and not sure what setting to adjust.
The situation began on July 5th, after I powered on the machine from work. The motherboard indicator lit up a steady white light with no boot-up and no display signal.
What I did:
- Cleaned the system
- Replaced the GPU with a second PCIe slot and updated its power connectors (I also installed several drivers including Armoury Crate, AMD Adrenaline update, and Windows updates the day before the problems started)
- Experienced occasional issues even when the PC was functioning normally until reboots started
I didn't remember much after that, as things worked for a while. Then I noticed severe lag and random crashes when playing Cyberpunk, especially when moving the camera. The game also crashed during Project Zomboid and camera movement. It seems I realized that the second PCIe slot is less powerful than the first, and I'm still learning more.
To try a solution, I reformatted my PC, re-soldered everything to the correct positions, updated all drivers, and installed the latest software for testing. Everything ran smoothly now, and I'm gradually recovering performance.
I've been doing daily benchmark tests with 3DMark to check for any recurring issues.
Summary of problems:
- The PC reboots when the GPU is under heavy use
- System crashes during 3DMark GPU tests or while playing games like Cyberpunk or Project Zomboid
- Screen flickers before a reboot or crash occurs
For reference, I've recorded videos showing the system rebooting after display issues and flickering during benchmarking.
Footage to share:
- Videos of the system rebooting after display problems while doing benchmarks
- Display flickering during benchmarking but not during reboots
- Screen flickers before a crash or reboot
Tips I found helpful:
- GPU crashes when it's busy
- I experienced crashes during specific game settings
- Using the latest AMD Adrenaline drivers (v23.7.1) helped reduce instability
- Some apps like Cyberpunk 2077 and Project Zomboid are particularly sensitive
I'm still unsure if the issue is with my GPU or my power supply. I'm considering using the GPU warranty and planning a local hardware check-up.
Additional details:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
- GPU: XFX AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT
- RAM: 2x16GB G.Skill Trident Z Neo (3600MHz)
- SSD: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB
- HDD: Seagate Barracuda Compute 3.5" 1TB
- PSU: Be Quiet! Pure Power 11 FM 650W
- Monitor: ASUS TUF 27" VG27A @144Hz (HDMI)
- Fans: 6 aRGB
- Case: Good airflow
- UPS: AWP Aide Pro LCD 600W-1000VA
- Overclocking: Not attempted since July 5
I'm planning to use my GPU warranty but want to try fixing it first before returning it. I also intend to have a local technician inspect the system.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm feeling anxious because I can't afford another GPU and want to avoid wasting time.
The PC remains functional though the flickering continues, especially after prolonged use. I haven't seen any crashes yet, only occasional screen glitches and a flickering stream with Discord since my friends observed it.
