I chose the R3 3100 for its balance of cost and performance. I'm struggling with compatibility on B450 boards. If the motherboard supports the R3 3100 CPU, does it still require an update? Should I upgrade the BIOS or install a newer CPU instead? The specs say the supported BIOS version is P3.20 for Asrock B450M Steel Legend. Are there B450 motherboards that can be updated safely without needing a compatible CPU?
Following a BIOS upgrade, everything functions properly. Certain models are shipped ready with the latest version, whereas earlier versions (pre-3100) might lack updates. Simply request the retailer to install it—most offer this service at no cost.
New batches of certain B450 models will include a recent BIOS update ready to support Ryzen 3000 processors, though this isn't assured. Confirm with the seller or look for a "Ryzen 3000 Ready" label. MSI's Max series versions are confirmed compatible from the start (B450-A Pro Max, B450 Gaming Plus Max, B450M Mortar Max, B450 Tomahawk Max, and some more affordable options).
Recent b450 boards typically include the latest BIOS updates. MSI’s maximum boards support Zen 2, similar to what @Mateyyy mentions. Check the box label for a “Ryzen 3000 ready” sticker if yours came with older BIOS. If you received an older model, contact the vendor or store to have it upgraded.
I cannot confirm if there are B450 boards with this feature but some motherboards can perform BIOS updates without a CPU installed. Depending on how long the board has been released there's a fair chance it will come with near or the latest BIOS but the chance exists you could end up with a board that needs the update to support the CPU. In this case you'll need a 1XXX, 2XXX series CPU to do it. You would have to be careful though not to use a older CPU that's having it's support dropped. AMD also offers what I believe are free upgrade kits. Though you'll be waiting extra days for that to show up if you decide to go that route.
I set up a setup a couple of months ago using a B450 Mortar Max paired with a 3600X, and it has performed very well ever since. Their products are among the best available for this model.
