Uncertain about choosing between i9 10900K and AMD for your new gaming PC setup
I’ve already placed most of my components for the next build except the motherboard, GPU, and CPU. I’m holding off until next week for real-world testing, reviews, and tips about the upcoming i9 10900K. Having used Intel all my life, switching to AMD would be unfamiliar territory, so I prefer sticking with what I’m comfortable with. Still, if AMD Ryzen offers significant advantages over Intel’s i9 10900K in gaming, I might reconsider. Right now, I lack experience with AMD’s architecture, but I’ll likely match the CPU choice—whether i9 10900K or AMD Ryzen—paired with the upcoming NVIDIA Ampere GPU, probably the 3080 Ti. I’m unsure if it will fit well with AMD Ryzen, which is a concern for me. This machine will mainly handle gaming and some creative work with Office. What do you think? Any positive comments about the i9 10900K have come up? Will anyone be purchasing it?
The 3080ti is said to support PCIe gen 4, which the i9 10900k cannot use. If confirmed, choosing AMD could be preferable for gaming. Wait for Nvidia to clarify if it uses PCIe gen 3. In that case, Intel would likely have a speed edge based on past performance, though this remains unconfirmed without benchmarks.
we haven't confirmed yet whether bandwidth matters, as it hasn't been a concern for the R5000 lineup.
AMD's Ryzen matches Intel's i9 10900K in performance. For an ASUS motherboard, look for models supporting Ryzen 7000 series chipsets like the B650 or B660. This will help you get started with your learning journey.
10900K generates a lot of heat, so effective cooling is essential. It reaches around 90°C in liquid cooling. It might be better to wait and compare the Ryzen 4000 before deciding. Intel isn't the best option at the moment.
It's the 3950x model. You'll receive 2c/4t more than the 10900k, plus significantly better performance. Regarding clock speeds, Ryzen and Intel are closely competing now because Ryzen offers higher IPC rates compared to Intel's faster clock speeds, though this comes with more heat and power usage.
Talk about the next Ryzen 4000 release. The more I hear about the i9 10900K, the more concerned I become about its heat output. I already bought an NZXT Kraken Z73 AIO cooler, and I’m hoping it will be compatible with AMD Ryzen if I decide to switch from the i9 10900K.
If yes, perhaps it makes sense to wait for AMD's Ryzen 4000. By the way, I just checked the Ryzen 3950X and it costs $720? That seems quite costly, especially compared to the i9 10900K.
