They're actually checking if it's a registered ECC or not. Most unregistered ones usually have an additional RAM chip, but no ECC chip in the center.

The "u" in PC2 5300U indicates unbuffered output. An "f" signifies buffering is active.

Wait, don't go after that RAM. Upon closer inspection of the image, it's a 5300P, not U as described. The 'P' stands for parity or buffered dimms, which won't fit in your setup.
