Hello, everyone. I’m looking for some guidance on my recent setup. I bought a new rig with these details: an Intel Core i9 12900K processor (3.2GHz base, 5.2GHz turbo), 12th Gen, 16 cores, 24 threads, LGA 1700, water cooler, AMD chipset, B660 motherboard, DDR4 RAM, 8GB 3200MHz, black with two SSDs, a GAMING OC NV2 SSD (16GB, 500GB), a RTX 4070 Ti GAMING OC graphics card (12GB, GDDR6X), a SuperFrame PSU, 850W, 80 Plus Gold, full modular design with PCIe 5.0 and PFC AC power. I also have a Samsung Odyssey G40 monitor at 240Hz.

I’ve been experiencing sudden and significant FPS drops in games like The Witcher 3 and Valorant. Even when running at ultra settings, the performance plummets after a few minutes, dropping from around 500 FPS to just 10-20 FPS. After about 10-15 seconds, it recovers briefly but then restarts the low FPS cycle. The issue seems to occur roughly every two minutes. Temperatures look normal—CPU stays between 60-65°C and GPU around 55°C. During those drops, my CPU time jumps to about 100ms, while FPS stays very low. Also, when I cap frames at 240, the drop takes longer to appear but still happens.

Anyone have insights into what might be causing this? Thanks in advance for your help.

Check if it's truly a 120mm cooler. What method are you using to monitor your temps? If your CPU is indeed cooling under a 120mm water cooler, it might have been significantly optimized.

There are two main issues highlighted. First, the 12900K isn't compatible with a 120AIO cooler—it simply can't handle it due to excessive heat. Second, the bigger concern is that the board doesn't accept a 12900K; it only supports certain models. The power delivery from the motherboard isn't sufficient for such a high-performance chip, and it appears the BIOS has been adjusted to prevent overheating. The maximum supported TDP for the board is 65W, as noted in the source link.

Great observation. The build looks off, especially with the 65W CPU which would perform better at those temperatures.

I don't have a purchase history. Could you clarify which item you're asking about?

And to mention the PSU, I can't find any information on Super Frame at all.

It seems like you're suggesting a possible course of action. Would you like to clarify what you mean?

Thanks for your thoughts. It seems the shop that sold me didn’t understand much about rig building. I’ll reach out again to exchange this motherboard, water cooler, and memory cards. Should the Asus ROG Strix B660-F Gaming paired with a 240mm water cooler work for me?

Your project fits a 360mm size, that's great. The 12900k is an impressive processor, and yes, this board will definitely support it.
