Imagine you're in Skyrim and it suddenly stops working. Trying to switch to another task by pressing Alt+Tab results in a black screen and a need to restart your system. This can happen if the game becomes unresponsive, like with Witcher 2 freezing.

I understand the process in Skyrim involves switching tabs and using Alt+Tab again. For Witcher 2, it might be similar but could differ slightly.

Pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete occasionally helps. -source: Spending hours gaming on a potato, probably.

Run a borderless windowed mode whenever possible to stop this from occurring. Tip: Press Ctrl+Alt+Del, open Task Manager, and end the program there occasionally works.

Is your system using Windows 8? It's quite common for me to encounter this.

If you only have one monitor, begin with a simple task like a calculator or browser in the background. Launch the game in full screen or windowed mode, and whenever you need to press alt+tab, it will take you to the background app (calculator or browser) while keeping your taskbar visible. I used to play League of Legends on one monitor, and alt+tab didn’t work because there was no place to switch to (desktop isn’t a valid solution either).
