Unable to start from my SSD (MSI X58 Pro-E)
Hey there, just got my MSI X58 Pro-E board and the Xeon X5650. After uploading the system to post, I attempted to boot from my SSD using Windows 10. The OS recognized it as a drive but couldn't start (please pick a correct boot device). Then I tried using my HDD with the same Windows setup, and that worked perfectly.
Restarting Windows might fix the issue. It seems the bootloader for that installation could be the problem.
The Windows installation worked on another computer, but the HDD also functioned properly.
Attempt a fresh installation. I believe this should resolve your problems.
I checked the setup for X5650 on MSI X58 Pro-E. Since I used the same board, I tried the CPU again today and got a boot without post or video. Some guides suggest others are using this CPU on the same board, even though it’s not officially supported. On the other hand, someone else mentioned they’re running an E5620 and it works perfectly.
I possess the identical case but also have an NVMe drive. I purchased the SN850X and connected it via a M.2 to PCIe x4 adapter from glotrends, which is very common on Amazon. It was offered as a functional partition but wasn’t recognized by my BIOS. I’m having trouble locating it anywhere. For your reference, I haven’t installed any drivers for the SSD or adapter yet—I just restarted my PC. My BIOS version is V8.15 03192011. Does this clarify whether I can boot Windows from the SSD? And does using an adapter affect that?
