Hi everyone!
Situation: Desktop uses a Win10 Pro with two WD RED 4TB drives in RAID1 and shared data. Also dual-boots Windows 7 Home. My laptop runs Win10 and needs access to those shared folders. I’ve shared the necessary directories and set up a homegroup.
Problem: On laptop boot, it tries to locate shared folders/homegroup items but fails when idle or idle for a while. Once found, everything works fine. I can view basic shared files but can’t open them. When I return to desktop, access resumes. It seems the drives on my desktop become inactive and the laptop can’t wake them.
Issue has persisted for years—previously used Win7 (desktop) and Win8.1 (laptop) with a single 3TB HDD. Any suggestions? I’ll test at home and also try booting Win7 on desktop to see if it helps.
Best, Stef

Checking your desktop power settings and ensuring drives don’t spin down is necessary. In your setup, the system may complain about needing to access shares after a drive stops, but opening the mapped drive folder on My Computer resolves the issue.

It seems you want to adjust your desktop power settings so hard drives don’t enter sleep mode. GAHHHH Ninjaed by @Altecice

Check if your home network is permitted on the router. You mentioned using an Apple Airport Extreme, so ensure it’s set up correctly for your device.
