Hey, I just helped a friend switch to Linux. I set up PopOS 19.10, installed Steam, and followed his instructions to run "Total War - Warhammer II." When the game started, it told me his graphics card driver didn’t work with the Vulkan API and suggested using the amdgpu driver instead. I looked at the support page and followed the steps from that link. After changing the kernel settings, the game ran smoothly. Now I’m curious if I should try this on my own system since we have similar GPUs—I own an R9 270x while he has an R9 280. He mentioned some games struggle with FPS even on older hardware. I’ve tried again but still see the same kernel issue in the system details, despite flipping settings. What should I do next?

Do you have the AMD GPU driver set up? If yes, you can simply remove the built-in driver, as it's not necessary.

Hi Sauron & tbh Im not sure When I did this for my friend I did not install any extra drivers, I just used the pre-installed drivers that came with the Os. After I rebooted his machine, I went into settings/details & the graphics driver had changed from AMD Pitcairn to Amdgpu. When I do this on my pc it stays on AMD Pitcairn. Are you saying that I need to install the amdgpu drivers separately to get this to work & if so how can i check if they are installed already and why did I not have to do this with my friends PC even tho we both have the same OS 19.10?

It appears the driver is likely not initializing properly, causing the system to default to an alternative solution. The output suggests amdgpu logs are being reviewed, and support for your card remains in development.

Hi Sauron & thx fior the reply ... The command above gives this result - dmesg | grep amdgpu [ 4.951477] [drm] amdgpu kernel modesetting enabled . If it's reverting as expected, trying to override it (like disabling or blacklisting another driver) would likely produce no video output.

Did you refresh the GRUB settings? I’m using `sudo update-grub` since it isn’t showing up clearly in the dmesg output, and I’m experiencing issues after rebooting.
