Unable to install SteamOS on the new build. This issue was reported in a troubleshooting post.
Hello fellow newcomers online, challenge: My latest PC setup isn’t launching from a SteamOS flash disk. I’m stuck between MacOS machines and a Steam Deck. More details: I aim to assemble a powerful machine for modern gaming and enhanced Blender performance. The SteamOS setup appeals because it feels familiar after using it on the Deck, and I value its compatibility with Proton and ease in running or modifying old titles. This project is driven by the need for a Linux-based OS that lets me seamlessly switch between productivity and gaming modes. The desire to maintain Proton support and simplify game updates is key.
Specifics: CPU – AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D @ 4.7 GHz, 8 cores; Cooler – Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE; Motherboard – Gigabyte X870 GAMING WIFI6 ATX AM5 (BIOS v3); RAM – Corsair Vengeance 32 GB (2×16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL30; HDD – Samsung 990 Pro 2 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4; GPU – RX 7900 XTX 24 GB Sapphire NITRO+; Case – Corsair FRAME 4000D ATX; PSU – Corsair RM1000x (2024); Monitor – Acer Nitro KG271 27.0" 1920x1080; RAM setup – pre-installation check passed, BIOS still recognizes all components.
I followed the official re-image guide for SteamOS installation, but faced persistent issues: the drive would either show a Gigabyte splash or a blank screen after reboot. After several attempts, I disabled Secure Boot and tried booting from the Steam Deck via command line, yet stuck in the same dead loop. I also attempted to build a bootable drive on the Deck using Etcher, but the outcome remained unchanged.
I considered upgrading to another Linux distro, though I worry about compatibility with games without Proton’s layer. Still, a functional alternative is preferable to total failure. Outside of Secure Boot, the BIOS defaults are troublesome. I’m unsure if updating the BIOS will help, given my limited experience with flashing on the MOBO.
Outside the box, this process feels frustrating and exhausting. I once imagined a smooth transition to another OS, but now the reality is more complicated than I hoped.
