I received a Strix B450F Gaming (not Gaming II) from a friend to assist my colleague in setting up his first PC. He’s planning to install a 5th Gen Ryzen CPU and my friend advised that the BIOS might not be current, so I replaced it with a spare Ryzen 5 1600 to update it. The system is currently running version 2801, Windows 10, and all chipset drivers are up to date. I attempted to flash the BIOS via USB and on the SSD, but both methods failed. I also tried the latest BIOS (5003) on both drives and the next one from my current BIOS (2901), but it kept displaying errors like “Selected file is not a proper BIOS!” or “File could not be read.” I tested multiple drives, using USB 2.0 and 3.0 formatted as FAT32, added a M.2 drive, and downloaded the new BIOS, yet the issue persisted. Is there anything else I should try? Could a corrupted BIOS be the cause?
The selected BIOS doesn’t match the exact model name. It’s likely due to a minor spelling difference or a similar-sounding version. This often happens with USB ports or other components.
File name should have seven characters before dot and three after (dot.bin).
It's confirmed. The upcoming BIOS 2901 won't flash, and the latest version also fails. I've tested several BIOS files and used a renamer when available, but nothing worked. Some older BIOS names are lengthy without a renamer file—do they have a specific name? Or should I just use a 7-letter prefix with a dot and three letters? None of them mention needing an earlier version installed. I attempted the next one in sequence, but the issue persisted.
I changed the GPU and SSD, and the system updated successfully using the same flash drive. I’m still a bit puzzled but feel better now.
