I’m clearly talking about collaborating with a freelancer on a project. On my Windows machine it’s causing issues, while it functioned well on other laptops. As a final step, I’m considering turning off Real-Time Protection.

I’ll clarify that question for you. You’re asking about the program and its goal, especially in light of the WannaCry incident.

I don’t suggest doing this, but there are tools to disable it. Destroying Windows spying (DWS) aims to halt telemetry, auto-updates, remove undeletable metro apps, but it can also wipe Windows Defender. Be careful—it permanently removes Windows Defender, not just disabling real-time protection. I strongly don’t recommend this and I match @nerdslayer1’s view. Still, you have to follow through. Consider making a backup or creating a system restore point just in case.

Consider this approach. If your method fails, I'll switch to mine.

You can turn it off, though it will only work temporarily. It seems someone set a group policy to prevent you from altering this setting later. The correct approach is to include the executable file and its installation directory in the exception list.
