Hey everyone, I'm really struggling right now and need some guidance. My PC suddenly stops working without warning, especially during certain moments in games. I recently installed Windows 10, updated the BIOS and drivers, and even ran stress tests on all components. Everything seems fine. The error logs only show "Unexpected Shutdown."
My system specs are: CPU - Ryzen 7 9800X3D, RAM - 32GB Kingstone at 6000MT/s, GPU - AMD RX 6900 XT, motherboard - ASRock B650E, power supply - Seasonic Prime Ultra 1000W. I play a variety of games—modern titles, old games, and WoW. I haven’t had any shutdowns while playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R.2 or WoW regularly.
However, things change when I play WoW during intense boss fights. The shutdowns become more frequent. Recently, my PC stopped working randomly in WoW, even after hours of gameplay. I also tried swapping out my GPU to RX 6700 XT and RX 7700 XT—both worked perfectly. But when I switched to the new RX 6900 XT, the problem returned.
I suspect the GPU might be the issue, but I’m not sure. My PSU is about 6.5 years old. I plan to upgrade my GPU soon and might need a new PSU too. I’m worried about something being faulty, possibly the power supply or another component. I’ve ruled out the RAM and CPU issues so far.
Could anyone help figure out why this keeps happening? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
Hey there, based on what you've tried with different GPUs and the issues you're facing, I'd focus on checking RAM, CPU, motherboard or power supply. It seems your temperatures are fine, so maybe the PSU is the culprit? Do you have another PSU you could test? You might also want to remove any unnecessary components and see if the issue persists with just the RAM at 4800MHz or a single 16GB stick.
Your GPU likely requires 2×8-pin PCIe power connectors. The PSU may provide 4×8-pin PCIe connectors. Have you attempted swapping the existing 8-pin connectors on the PSU side, or using alternative cables? (Be sure to fully secure connections) Edited January 19, 2025 by leclod
I tried to remove all OC, did clean install of Windows, refreshed BIOS, everything on the software side has been tried I wanna say. The truth is that the issues began when I changed from 7600X to 9800X3D so that would be obvious culprit, but I did a lot of testing and there is no indication that it is the root cause. So I don't really have any reason to RMA the CPU at this time. I have just installed different PSU (Be quiet! PURE POWER 12 M 1000W). PC booted up no problem so we shall see if I encounter the issue again. Sadly, I do not have a way to trigger the shut down issue on my own. It is quite random outside of WoW. GPU actually requires 2*8 pin and 1*6 pin connector, it is quite a hungry one. I could have tried to move to a different lines / connectors on the PSU, I did not think of that. I tried to turn off all the OC, AMD Smart Access Memery (Resizable Bar), etc. Nothing really helped.
