Generally, trying to reach full Gigabit speed on one device can limit performance elsewhere. Gigabit is meant for handling multiple tasks simultaneously without slowing down, rather than performing a single high-speed download. If you decide to test, run several speed checks at once and observe the results in Task Manager to ensure it isn’t reaching its limits. Downloading from various servers concurrently can also help assess real-world performance. Many speed-test sites operate at 10Gbps but only run hundreds of tests, making them unsuitable for achieving true Gigabit speeds. This is why uploading tends to be easier—most users have balanced connections, leaving more bandwidth available for incoming traffic than outgoing. I’ve heard from a networking expert on another forum that he never managed to hit Gigabit on speedtest.net; only fast.com came close.

I own additional laptops but lack an ethernet link. Home devices are available yet nothing works for testing via a stable server download. The technician checked his laptop to the identical server as mine and observed speeds near 940Mbit/s, confirming the connection is solid. On Speedtest.net you can select various setups and servers. I know single uploads often depend on the server, but my main scenarios involve game downloads/updates and paid file sharing, where multiple connections are needed for a single file. I’ve tried the setup and rely on internet usage to be nearly flawless. The technician’s test using the same method and equipment would contradict my experience, as he achieved the expected speeds with an ethernet-connected laptop. I don’t use any software to track throughput; I’ve only relied on Task Manager and Resource Monitor during downloads. I’ve also used Speedtest.net with the Wingo server in Zurich, which is my ISP, and maintained a ping of 4ms, matching results from nearby servers.

It seems the device tested directly with the modem, though a second router is present between them. Most consumer routers don’t support gigabit routing.

There is nothing on my side except the router, which is directly linked to the fibre port. He checked the speed without the router and with it, both giving accurate results. He plugged his cable into the router as an "end user" just like I do with my PC. Therefore, the router, ISP, and fibre quality are all in order.

He likely uses another server for testing. Did you notice the software or website he was employing for speed checks? Was it speedtest.net?
