I believed the shortcut was Ctrl + A + D to exit without ending the session. To terminate completely, use Ctrl + C

It was actually Ctrl + A + D, and the setup wasn't correct. I configured it, verified it worked, moved the box, but after booting I couldn't use the screen for any reason. Thanks @Lurick for the quick fix—otherwise I'd keep trying the wrong one.
